Presentation

Trained at the cabinetmaking and marquetry workshops of École Boulle, and in event design, Dimitry Hlinka has developed a heightened sensitivity to contemporary issues, forging a link between craftsmanship and innovation, age-old skills and new technologies. He is involved in every stage of the design process, from ideation to the production of functional prototypes.

A 2001 graduate in cabinetmaking at École Boulle, Nicolas Pinon went on to specialise in traditional and contemporary finishing techniques. He discovered Japanese urushi lacquer at a lecture and was immediately enthused by this technique. In 2006 he had the privilege to meet master lacquer artist Nagatoshi Onishi, professor emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts, and, under his guidance, perfect his skills.

Project

Fibre végétale (Plant Fibre)

This project sets out to spark fresh interest in plant fibre as a material for design and craft, and gain insight into often little-known techniques.

By building on their experience working alongside Japanese specialists, Dimity Hlinka and Nicolas Pinon aim to develop innovative uses for plant fibre in France. Plant Fibre provides opportunity for creation, exploration and inter-cultural collaboration which can promote the use of plant fibre in design and making.
