Project

Living Colours

Drawing on an existing network of master dyers, Sandrine Rozier set out to revisit the ancestral science of extracting dyes from plants native to different regions of Japan, in the light of modern-day chemistry. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, she studied plants’ capacity to dye textiles as well as noting their medicinal virtues.

Over the course of her residency, Sandrine Rozier explored the link between plants and the sensoriality of colour. She also planned to draw up a repertoire of colours and develop ways to make Japanese natural dyeing techniques more widely known.
