A 2003 graduate of École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, visual artist Sandrine Elberg suggests a poetic relationship between the cosmic myth and its iconography. Her photography inspires us to dream, speculate and project ourselves into the unknown. The very nature of the photographic medium, and its scientific reality, led Elberg to projects where voyages to far-off lands combine with exploration narratives; to places inhabited only by the imagination. She followed her first photobook, Cosmic, with a second, M.O.O.N Mysterious Orbital Object Non-identified. A journey through the cosmos, it garnered a number of prizes, including the 2019 Prix Nadar, the 2019 Lucie Photo Book Prize and the 2020 PhotoEspana Prize. Her work is regularly shown in France and across the world. Sandrine Elberg is represented by Fisheye Gallery in Paris and Arles.

Project
La poésie cosmique des pierres (The cosmic poetry of rocks)
During her residency, Sandrine Elberg researched the concept of suiseki – an art form introduced to Japan during the Asuka period, in the sixth century, in which rocks, fashioned by the effects of wind, water or time, recall the shape of an identifiable object or landscape. Guided by the works of Miyazawa Kenji and Roger Caillois – both passionate about geology and chemical physics – Elberg undertook photographic and aesthetic research into this mineral symbolism. The oldest meteorite conserved in Japan, since 861, completed her scientific study.
